All that matters...

All that matters is…

To be rich in spirit not merely in wealth
To be enlightened not merely educated
To be proactive not merely reactive
To be an original not merely a replica
To be involved not just be an onlooker
To be empowering others rather than usurping power
To be an embodiment of love not just a paradigm of virtue

And yet all that matters is

Not just the plans I made but the goals I achieved
Not just the goals I achieved but the means I used
Not just the means I used but the intent I had
Not just the intent I had but the daring to dream
Not just the dream in my sleep but the awakening in my dream
Not just the awakening in my dream but the impact on the world
And the impact on the world comes from what I believe Matters to us all…

Being a better ME !

FEAR -has two meanings

I came across these intriguing expansions of the word FEAR and was sure it would provide an interesting analysis. Earlier I had written on the very popular expansion False Evidence Appearing Real (http://www.poweract.blogspot.in/2009/12/fear.html) and thought this to be an equally enlightening way to appreciate the context and interpretation in everyday life.

Forget Everything And Run is something that everyone would experienced sometime or the other. It is the essence of survival else we would not have been blessed with it. There is nothing to be ashamed of by giving in to your fears for not all of us are alike and we all have our inhibitions, anxieties, quirks and phobias. However, we also carry a lot of false notions about our ability to cope with a stressful situation and that is when we need to ensure that our fear is not irrational, unsubstantiated or unfounded. E.g. Fear of exams is often the result of poor preparations that triggers panic as exams draw near. Fear of public speaking is actually a culmination of negative thinking about all the possible disastrous scenarios that we visualize and don’t dare to confront.

So before we decide to give in to our fears we need to calmly examine the rationale and probability of our fears being genuine. E.g. A person with a very short temper would be well advised to realize his/ her inability to keep the temper in check and walk away from a possible explosive situation without feeling like a coward. Suicide is perhaps the most unfortunate nadir of FEAR translating to read Forget Everything And Run

Face Everything And Rise on the other hand is key tool that leaders utilize to stand tall and influence others. Confronting our fears is the best way to find out if the fears are valid or largely imaginary. The risk of ending up with egg on the face or failure is very real but the experience garnered would be invaluable. Being pragmatic and realistic is essential if one dares to face fears to ensure that the odds are favorable. E.g. It would be fool hardy to show false bravado and confront a desperate gunman, unless the person has no choice. Similarly taking on potentially dangerous dares or getting into an ugly spat with a charged up mob, tend to be foolish choices exercised when better alternatives could be at hand.

Peer pressure is often a trigger for people to succumb to pressures of being seen as a sissy. Getting addicted to vices like drinking and smoking or drugs has its beginnings in people succumbing to peer pressure and indulging to begin with. If they face the pressure and rose above the pressure, it is possible that they would be spared the addiction.  Another example would be that of a person who is not comfortable driving at high speeds should never be pressurized by fellow passengers into reckless driving but be bold enough to face the taunts and stick to his/ her comfortable speed limit. Articulating a minority view points with passion and conviction in many ways is symbolic of how one can cope with a majority pressure and yet Face Everything And Rise.

FAME

Almost everyone would love to be noticed, acknowledged and applauded and recognition is a sure shot way to attain that status. Recognition of a person is only possibly when the persons FAME has spread far and wide and implies that he/ she is Finding Acclaim Magnified Everywhere. Fame has to be earned; this is best accomplished by a combination of excellence, diligence, expertise and supported by exposure to the world at large. Noble prize winners are on one extreme of this continuum of fame whilst the sportsmen, singers. Actors/ actresses and showbiz related personnel often occupy the other end of the spectrum. In between are the millionaires, the radicals and out of the box achievers.

This does not mean that ordinary mortals do not have their tryst with fame. In any setting and in any sphere of life, there would always be people who excel or achieve or influence significantly the environment that they interact with. Obviously then they get noticed, talked about and sought out for their contribution is something valued and appreciated. The fame they are privy to maybe be limited by their circle of influence but nevertheless they do get to be proactive change agents and possibly role models too.

When one achieves fame, it is essential to be grounded for far too often fame can be very fickle. Fame thrives on continuous qualitative and impactful output for no one can merely rest on past laurels. There are times when fame finds a very reluctant partner who would rather remain in the background and do what they love to do. Yet the benchmark that one sets because of the fame that one achieves is often inspirational. motivational and  influential enough to charge up the general population and the youth in particular. Fame provides the spark that ignites and fans the fire of zeal, enthusiasm and proactiveness essential to bring about a change for the better.

The big risk in achieving fame is the tendency to equate it to a shield of perennial success that will guard against idiocy, lethargy and invincibility. Ironically when fame flirts with you, she is demands the best, raises you a pinnacle from where a fall is often fatal and fame can often be very fleeting and slippery. Yet the romance with fame is something very cherished, something very possible and something very invigorating for at the end of the day it is the FAME that allows you the luxury of Finding Acclaim Magnified Everywhere.

Action Points:

  1. Outline 3 qualities and /or skills and / or achievements and /or passions that you believe should get you fame. For each of the 3 points jotted down, write down a role model who has achieved fame.
  2. Name 3 people each (One international, one national and one local person)who have achieved fame in the following areas

BELIEF

What distinguishes the successful person from one who has not realized his/ her full potential is the BELIEF that they are able to begin with and sustain in pursuit of their goals for they Begin Efforts Looking Inwards Embracing Faith. As they say well begun is half done and self belief is the key to beginning a task well. Belief is not something that is alien to us. We were born with it but we were not aware of it. Look at a little child who first begins to turn on the side, then learns to turn over on to its belly and thereafter begins to crawl. While instinct and evolutionary process could explain this progression, one cannot deny that there was an unconscious self belief that propelled this progress. Look at a toddler taking its first steps. It falls, perhaps hurts itself, cries but soon the failure is forgotten and with renewed belief it keeps attempting till he/she has taken the first wobbly steps.

The problem with us lacking belief actually began when we experienced and understood the term fear. Fear sows in us the seeds of doubt and slowly the large majority of us fall into a quagmire of self doubt, insecurity and risk aversion. The antidote for this is calculated risk taking which involves making a realistic assessment of the reality around and then cautiously proceeding to pursue ones goals. Once we repeatedly do this and embrace success, fear is slowly erased and replaced by belief that comes from regained confidence, renewed passion and anticipated success.

The long term means to have BELIEF is in Looking Inwards and finding your strengths, your abilities, your passions and your temperament. In the process you would also become aware of your limitations, your dislikes, your fears and your inadequacies.  The process of looking inwards is a journey to self discovery; a path we often avoid, for fear of confronting the unpalatable. Yet it is this self discovery that liberates us from our self imposed limitations be it in being risk averse or failing to harness our talents. Ironic as it sounds, this is actually a conscious attempt to discover the unconscious powers within that have remained latent but can now be ignited with a zealous spirit and harnessed into a passionate flame that powers us and fires us from within.

Once we realize that we are powerful beyond belief, we need to Embrace with Faith everything that has to be done to attain our goals. As they say Faith can move mountains; and you can imagine how much more easier it is to move ourselves as compared to mountains, provided we have faith in our abilities, our resilience and our cherished desires. Faith transcribes self belief into a self propelling, self directed and self motivated ball of energy that launches itself to attain its goal.

So take a deep look inside and find your destination, then embrace with faith the efforts you have to take and the sacrifices you have to make and Begin your Efforts for that is when your BELIEF will translate into the success that comes with you Beginning Efforts Looking Inwards Embracing Faith.

Action Points:

  1. Source a copy of the book You will see it when you believe it by Wayne W. Dyer and get another perspective into Self Belief.
  2. Attempt the following task. With nothing else in your pocket other than a handkerchief and your personal id spend a day in the city and if possible raise as much money as you can for your favorite charity (without disclosing your intent or begging). Hints: (a) Do not carry any money or your credit cards with you. (b)You can earn that money by doing odd jobs. (c) Before you begin also write down the amount you believe you can collect for the charity so that you have a worthwhile goal to pursue.
